Masculinity.. what is it? No seriously what is it? Is it the justification for a man hitting his wife over what to cook for dinner? Is it the notion that a man cannot act camp or effeminate in front of other men? Or is it the basic idea that a man must be a provider and he is an 'other' if he fails to do so?
Masculinity is an ideology thats been around since the dawn of time itself. In whatever belief system that you have faith in, masculinity is there since the very beginning. If you are an evolutionist, then, the idea of masculinty is there with the cavemen, heck it even came with the idea of being a 'caveman'. Masculinity can be easily defined as a man is not man lest he provide shelter, food and safety to his family. This definition is still justified until today. If you're into creation, then the definition towards this ideology is still pretty much the same. Man is to work off this land and what not. However this is more towards the classical view of masculinity, where they also justify man's reign over women, and thus should not be relied on.
Ideologies dont change, they evolve. Ever wondered why 14 year old boys act the way they do? You know what I mean, pushing each other in public, talking about masturbating out loud, over-masculine basically. Well, put yourself back to your teenage days. The days when we are confused, searching for our identity. Being lost, we tend to over-act the way that society intend our genders represent. Thus now you see why tween girls put on 5 inches of make up on, now you know why boys vandalise public phones, its the biological equivalent of mountain goats headbutting each other or lioness prancing about... mmeh where was i, oh yes. Masculinity, dare I say it , is down to the power of the penis.
Phallic power suggest that since men are able to penetrate and is not the penetratee, they are then a creature a step above the other members of the species. This is as how you say it.. err.. utter bullshit, however the power of the penis is highly important to the male species in order to feel masculine. This is evident in the movie fight club. Remember the scene with the testicular cancer group? Ask yourself this question, why did Bob with big tits cry? Why I hear you ask? well its because he cannot feel masculine, in turn he cannot be a provider, hence he does not embody masculinity, this alone can drive a straight man nuts..
